Dr. Canisius Kanangire
Dr. Canisius Kanangire is the Executive Director of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), a role he assumed after serving as Executive Secretary of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), an intergovernmental organization based in Abuja, Nigeria. He brings over 35 years of leadership experience across regional and international institutions focused on sustainable development, natural resources, and capacity building.
He holds a PhD and MSc in Aquatic Sciences with a specialization in Freshwater Ecology, Aquaculture, and Wetlands Management from the University of Namur in Belgium. Additionally, he earned a Licence in Biology with a major in Environmental Sciences and an Undergraduate Certificate in Biology and Chemistry from the Institut Supérieur Pédagogique de Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Prior to his role at AMCOW, Dr. Kanangire served as Executive Secretary of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (2011–2016) and held multiple leadership positions at the Nile Basin Initiative (2004–2011), including Regional Manager for Capacity Building and Head of Strategic Planning and Management. Earlier in his career, he was a lecturer and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Rwanda and served on the Board of Directors of the Rwandan Institute for Agricultural Research (now the Rwanda Agricultural Board).
A Rwandan national, Dr. Kanangire is recognized for his strategic vision and expertise in managing international organizations. He is fluent in English, French, Kiswahili, and Kinyarwanda, and is well-versed in building partnerships and networks at continental and global levels.
