Dr. Deogracious Protas Massawe
Dr. Deogracious Protas is a Scientist at the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), with a PhD in Plant Pathology (Molecular Virology and Bioinformatics) from The Ohio State University, USA. His research expertise spans plant molecular diagnostics, viral pathogen detection, and crop improvement for disease resistance. At COSTECH, he has led national and international science initiatives and contributed to agricultural innovation dissemination.
Dr. Protas’ research focuses on strengthening food security through the development and deployment of advanced diagnostic tools for plant pathogens. His doctoral work utilized high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to detect and characterize known and novel viruses in maize and blueberry, with a significant contribution to understanding maize lethal necrosis (MLN) in Tanzania. This work aligns closely with CIMMYT’s efforts on MLN diagnostics and prevention of seed transmission.
Dr. Protas is a member of the Crop Science Association of Tanzania (CROSAT), the Tanzania Entomological Society (TES), and the National Biosafety Committee (NBC), contributing to science policy and biosafety governance.
